Technical Writer, Skype Developer Program

The Technical Writer will be responsible for developing technical documentation for 3rd party software developers building products that integrate with the Skype product & platform API’s. (https://developer.skype.com/Docs)

Specific deliverables and accountabilities include:

  • Provide clear and consistent Developer documentation:
  • Timely launch of API & SDK documentation and release notes, to coincide with key product releases (e.g. Desktop Windows/MAC beta & gold launches)
  • Integrated, searchable ‘know how’ documents on the Developer Zone
  • Define and maintain high editorial standards, processes and plans
  • Maintain close relationships with other Technical Writers and Customer Support teams across Skype
  • As required, provide editorial consultancy on Skype or supporting partner documents.
  • Write informative, supporting examples for how to use the Skype API and associated tools/components, including process flowcharts, diagrams, UI mockups etc.
  • Maintain a matrix of what API’s are supported on what products, including cross platform support & know issues/commands
  • Escalate and answer relevant support queries, provided from the Developer Support Team and others.
  • Assist the Developer Web Site manager to create compelling, readable content to a technical audience, and constantly improve the Docs web section and newsletter.
  • Work with the appropriate engineering and development teams on upcoming product/platform features, to ensure the planning and production of documentation. Maintain an overall map of Skype Desktop, mobile and embedded product & documentation plans & key dates.
  • Constantly be looking at ways of making documentation clearer, more professional looking and more useful.

Requirements:

Qualifications:

  • Graduated with relevant degree
  • Fluency in English mandatory

Skills:

  • 4+ years of technical writing experience with software or online systems
  • Proven project management skills
  • Some actual software development experience, in VB, Delphi, C++ and/or Java.
  • 4-year degree strongly preferred
  • Ability to translate complex technical concepts into easy-to-understand and straight-forward developer documentation, with the focus on deep understanding (rather than user based documents)
  • Expert knowledge of MS Office
  • Expertise with standard documentation tools: Visio, Adobe Acrobat, Adobe Photoshop, Dreamweaver
  • Proficiency in RoboHelp or relevant
  • Expertise in HTML

  • Travel required to Europe, Asia & US. Typically 1 visit a month to London
